It began when American spy planes discovered the missiles, leading to a U.S. naval blockade of Cuba and intense negotiations. The crisis ended when Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev agreed to remove the missiles in exchange for the U.S. promising not to invade Cuba and secretly agreeing to remove American missiles from Turkey.

In 1963, on November 22, President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas, while riding in a motorcade through Dealey Plaza. Johnson was sworn in as the 36th President of the United States shortly after Kennedy's death. PITTSFIELD - Margaret M. Porter, 46, of Westfield, a native of Pittsfield, died Tuesday, June 10, at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield.

Born in Pittsfield on June 6, 1957, daughter of Canio and Barbara Gallagher Carbone, she was a graduate of Pittsfield High School. She moved to Westfield in 1975.

She had been employed as a teacher's aide at the Fort Meadow School Early Childhood Center in Westfield for eight years.

She was a communicant of St. Peter's Church. She enjoyed working with children.

She leaves her husband of 21 years, Robert M. Porter; two sons, Jeremy M. Porter and Nathan R. Porter, both of Westfield, and a brother, Phillip R. Carbone of Westfield.

FUNERAL NOTICE - The funeral for Margaret M. Porter, who died June 10, 2003, will be Monday at 9 at FIRTION-ADAMS FUNERAL HOME, 76 Broad St., Westfield, followed by a Liturgy of Christian
