Mr. and Mrs. George E. Gallagher of 30 South Merriam St. today announced the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Barbara Ann, to Conio Carbone, son of Mrs. Felice Carbone of 12 Winter St. and Mr. Carbone of Venezuela. The wedding will be held Dec. 29 at St. Mark's Church.

Miss Gallagher is a graduate of St. Joseph's High School, class of 1955. She is employed by Liggett Drug Store.

Mr. Carbone is employed by Pittsfield Coal Gas Co. He attended schools in Italy.

Invention The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. Experimenting further, he discovered microwaves could cook food quickly. Raytheon patented the process, and by 1947, they built the first commercial microwave oven, called the 'Radarange.' Initially used in commercial settings, microwaves becomes affordable for home use by the 1960s and 1970s, revolutionizing cooking.

PITTSFIELD -- Canio Carbone, 66, of 42 Fairfield Ave., Westfield, formerly of Pittsfield, died Sunday at Noble Hospital in Westfield.
Born in Cairano, Italy, on April 6,1936, son of Margherita Metallo Carbone and the late Felice Carbone, he moved to Pittsfield in 1954 and to Westfield in 1976.

Mr. Carbone was employed by Westfield Gas and Electric Co. for 23 years, retiring as a gas superintendent in 1998. While in Pittsfield, he worked for Berkshire Gas Co.

He was a communicant of St. Peter's Church in Westfield and enjoyed playing golf and cooking.

His wife, the former Barbara A. Gallagher, died April 2, 1996.
Besides his mother, of the Bronx, N.Y., he leaves a son, Phillip G. Carbone of Westfield; a daughter, Margaret M. Porter of Westfield; three sisters, Angelina Arace of Torino, Italy, Josephine Frieri of Yonkers, N.Y., and Antoinette Santoro of the...Read MORE...
