1944 - D-Day, which occurred on June 6, 1944, was a pivotal World War II operation where Allied forces launched a massive invasion on the beaches of Normandy, France. Known as Operation Overlord, it involved over 156,000 troops from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and other Allied nations. The operation aimed to liberate Western Europe from Nazi German control. The landings marked the beginning of the end for Nazi Germany, leading to the eventual Allied victory in Europe.

1945 - The atomic bomb is invented (J. Robert Oppenheimer, et al., United States)

The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. Experimenting further, he discovered microwaves could cook food quickly. Raytheon patented the process, and by 1947, they built the first commercial microwave oven, called the 'Radarange.' 1962 - The Cuban Missile Crisis was a tense 13-day standoff in October 1962 between the United States and the Soviet Union over the installation of Soviet nuclear missiles in Cuba, just 90 miles from the U.S. coast. The crisis is considered the closest the Cold War came to escalating into a full-scale nuclear war. It began when American spy planes discovered the missiles, leading to a U.S. naval blockade of Cuba and intense negotiations. Obituary
Ed was born on July 31, 1938 at Booth Hospital in Covington, Kentucky and passed away on September 7, 2023. Ed was the son of Edward Charles Bader and Helen Caldwell Bader. Ed grew up with his sister, Cynthia Bader, in South Fort Mitchell Kentucky. He attended Beachwood High School where he played multiple sports, especially basketball. Ed received a BS in Chemistry and Biology at Eastern Kentucky University in 1960. The draft board got in the way of graduate school, so he joined the US Army Reserve 6 year program, and received an Honorable Discharge on June 30, 1966. In 1961, Ed traveled to California for the adventure of a lifetime and never looked back. He visited a friend working in Hanford, CA. Ed got employment at the Hanford Clinical Laboratory and after 2 years became a Certified Medical Technologist. In 1964, he moved to San Francisco to work at a large Hospital and met his first wife, Marian Elaine Lloyd who was a Registered Nurse. Ed and Marian were married in San Francisco ...Read full story
