1944 - D-Day, which occurred on June 6, 1944, was a pivotal World War II operation where Allied forces launched a massive invasion on the beaches of Normandy, France. Known as Operation Overlord, it involved over 156,000 troops from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and other Allied nations. The operation aimed to liberate Western Europe from Nazi German control. The landings marked the beginning of the end for Nazi Germany, leading to the eventual Allied victory in Europe.

1945 - The atomic bomb is invented (J. Robert Oppenheimer, et al., United States)

The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. Experimenting further, he discovered microwaves could cook food quickly. Raytheon patented the process, and by 1947, they built the first commercial microwave oven, called the 'Radarange.' Initially used in commercial settings, microwaves becomes affordable for home use by the 1960s and 1970s, revolutionizing cooking.

Mabery 'Tex' Simons of Enfield died Wednesday at Hartford Hospital. He was 77. He was born in Cross Plains, Texas, and lived in West Hartford before moving to Enfield 15 years ago. He was U.S. Army veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He was employed by Automatic Comfort Corp. for 32 years, retiring in 1993. He is survived by his wife, Shirley Simons; two sons, Gene Simons of Hamburg, Pa., and Scott Simons of Somers; a daughter, Susan Anderson of East Windsor; nine grandchildren; three great- grandchildren; a
Brother: , Ire Simons of Bangs, Texas; and two
Sister: s, Maxine Dimitri and Ruby Martell, both of Cross Plains, Texas. The funeral will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Leete-Stevens Enfield Chapels, 61 South Road, preceded by calling hours from 2 to 4 p.m. Interment will be private. Donations may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children, 516 Carew St., Springfield, MA 01104.
