The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. 1953 - Dwight D. Eisenhower becomes President of the United States

1953 - On July 27, 1953, the Korean War ended with the signing of an armistice agreement at Panmunjom. This ceasefire halted the conflict between North Korea, supported by China and the Soviet Union, and South Korea, backed by United Nations forces primarily from the United States. 1962 - The Cuban Missile Crisis was a tense 13-day standoff in October 1962 between the United States and the Soviet Union over the installation of Soviet nuclear missiles in Cuba, just 90 miles from the U.S. coast. The crisis is considered the closest the Cold War came to escalating into a full-scale nuclear war. David T. 'Ted' Cesan, 92, passed away peacefully in his home on October 15, 2016 surrounded by his loving family. 'Ted' as he was affectionately known was the husband and high school sweet heart to the late Dorothy 'Dee Dee' (Hamilton) Cesan; who predeceased him on January 15, 2015. They enjoyed more than 30 years of marriage together. Ted was born on June 27, 1924, in Springfield a son of the late David E. and Irene (Crouss) Cesan along with brother John and sister Ruth; but was a lifelong resident of Feeding Hills and Agawam. His family farmed, growing tobacco and produce. His father was a Representative of Eastern States Farmers Exchange and Ted and his brother John worked with their father in business ( David E. Cesan & Sons Inc.) delivering grain, seed, and fertilizers to local farmers until 1965 after the Exchange was acquired by Agway. Ted was also a firefighter for the Agawam Fire Department where he served for 30 years ( 1952-1982) , first as a volunteer and later appointed...Read full story
