Biography
L'ancêtre des Chartrand, Thomas Cherten, serait arrivé en Nouvelle-France entre 1663 et 1665. Lors des recensements de 1666 et 1667, il est domestique engagé chez Gilbert Barbier, un des pionniers de Montréal.

Certains ont prétendu sur la foi de tradition familiale que Chartrand était de Chartres, d'autres, la majorité affirment qu'il est originaire du pays de Caux en Normandie, plus précisément d'Ectôt-Les Baons. Il serait le fils de Louis Cherten et d'Hermine Queval.

Le 29 janvier 1669, Thomas Cherten épouse Thècle Hunault, fille de Toussaint Hunault dit Deschamps et de Marie Arcouet dit Lorgueil. Elle n'a que 13 ans étant née et baptisée le 23 septembre 1655 à Ville-Marie qu'elle se marie. Peu après le mariage, ils s'établissent à Longueuil dans la seigneurie de Charles Lemoyne. Ils n'y demeurent que peu d'années pour revenir s'établir à Montréal.
