Did You Know? Québec Généalogie - What is a 'dit/dite' name?  When the first settlers came to Québec from France it was a custom to add a 'dit' nickname to the surname. The English translation of 'dit' is 'said'. The Colonists of Nouvelle France added 'dit' names as distinguishers. A settler might have wanted to differentiate their family from their siblings by taking a 'dit' name that described the locale to which they had relocated. The acquiring of a 'dit' name might also be the result of a casual adoption, whereby the person wanted to honor the family who had raised them. Another reason was also to distinguish themselves by taking as a 'dit' name the town or village in France from which they originated. This custom ended around 1900 when people began using only one name, either the 'dit' nickname or their original surname.

Marriage notes:
"Pierre Gendreau dit LaPoussiere, the godfather of Pierre Delamarre, was willing to protect his godson and his mother. On 12 January 1663, notary Audouart drew up a third marriage contract for Jeanne Garnier. The thirty-three year old Pierre Gendreau, accepted Jeanne as his wife and lawful spouse, at Chateau-Richer on 24 January... There were ten years of happiness which made six flowers of life bloom, six Canadian branches of the Gendreau family. But the youngest, Genevieve Gendreau, was still unborn when her father left Jeanne Garnier before 12 October 1673."

'Pierre was the first to leave his homeland. ON 30 March 1656, he showed up at La Rochelle, in the study of the notary Pierre Moreau. On that day, the merchant Jacques Pepin received the commitments of a few young men wishing to try their luck in Canada... Pierre Gendreau and his companions embarked on a small ship named 'La Fortune 100'...'

'This ancestor, according to the registries, died in 1673. The authorities say that he died in circumstances which could not be revealed at that time. Historical fact tells us that he drowned while crossing the river on his way to the Ile d'Orleans. There is also the possibility that he became a prisoner of the Indians during an excursion. It is for these reasons that no date or religious ceremony was entered in the registries, except for the year of his disappearance, 1673. One fact to note: when his daughter Genevieve was born, on 12 October 1673, her birth certificate states that her father was dead.'
