Jacques CARTIER called it Île de Bacchus in 1535 because of the vines growing there, and rebaptized it Île d'Orléans in 1536 to honour the duc d'Orléans. In 1636 the island was granted to 8 associates by the Compagnie de la Nouvelle France. It became Île Sainte-Marie during the HURON settlement of 1650-57. These first farmers, installed on land belonging to Éléonore de Grandmaison at the far upstream end, were massacred in 1656 by the IROQUOIS. Land clearing began again in 1660...

Saint-Paul parish became Saint-Laurent parish in 1698, and a precise map of the island was made in 1689 by Robert de Villeneuve...

The beginning...
This territory was populated in the 1660s and the parish was erected in 1679 under the name of Saint-Paul by Mgr François de Montmorency de Laval, bishop of Quebec, but it changed its name in 1698 to become Saint-Laurent, following a request addressed by the lord of the island of Orleans, François Berthelot, count of Saint-Laurent.

1675 - A chapel was raised in Saint-Laurent in 1675.
The first church was built in 1675 by master carpenter Charles Pouliot. It was a wooden building located about 100 meters west of the current church.

Saint Lawrence of Rome was elected at the time the patron saint of the parish.

On April 6, 1676, Île d’Orléans became a county divided into four burgs: Saint-Pierre, Saint-Jean, Sainte-Famille and Saint-Paul (renamed Saint-Laurent in 1698).

In 1700, the parish received its first resident priest, Father François Poncelet, but the parish was canonically erected in 1714.

1759 - In the summer of 1759, Île d’Orléans was evacuated prior to the arrival of the Royal Navy and the English troops under the command of General Wolfe.
He established a military camp on the island to keep watch on Quebec City and the channels of the St. Lawrence River. The buildings on the island were nearly all razed after Wolfe’s defeat on July 31 at L’Ange-Gardien. Only a few homes were spared.

by a regulation of Sept. 20, 1721, confirmed by an Order in Council, Mar. 3, 1722, is 2 1/ 4 leagues from the river Maheu, along the South Channel to the house of Pierre Gosselin, including all lands within these limits to the centre of the island. - The observations made relative to the parish of St. Jean apply equally to the parish of St. Laurent.


1832 - ORLEANS ISLAND or ISLE ST. LAURENT, about 4 miles N.E. of Quebec, divides the River St. Lawrence into two channels. - 19 miles long and 5 1/ 2 broad, containing 69 sq. miles... Granted as a seigniory 15th Jan, 1636, to the Sieur Castellon. - It is at present divided into three distinct properties belonging to Madame Drapeau, Monsr. Poulain, and Monsr. Le Comte Dupre... It contains the parishes of Saint Pierre, Saint Jean, Sainte Famille, Saint Laurent, and Saint Francois, and the Islands of Madame and Reaux. - This island is next in size to that of Montreal, and approaches it in fertility and richness of soil more nearly than any ...
