1944 - D-Day, which occurred on June 6, 1944, was a pivotal World War II operation where Allied forces launched a massive invasion on the beaches of Normandy, France. Known as Operation Overlord, it involved over 156,000 troops from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and other Allied nations. The operation aimed to liberate Western Europe from Nazi German control. The landings marked the beginning of the end for Nazi Germany, leading to the eventual Allied victory in Europe.

1945 - The atomic bomb is invented (J. Robert Oppenheimer, et al., United States)

The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. Experimenting further, he discovered microwaves could cook food quickly. Raytheon patented the process, and by 1947, they built the first commercial microwave oven, called the 'Radarange.' Initially used in commercial settings, microwaves becomes affordable for home use by the 1960s and 1970s, revolutionizing cooking.

Arthur R. Metras, 74, of Shepard Road died Wednesday at St. Vincent's Hospital after an illness. He leaves his wife of 52 yrs., Ann B. (DiFederico) Metras. They were married Oct. 9, 1954.

He is survived by 4 children: Michael Metras and his wife Barbara of Willimantic, CT, Stephen and his wife Joan Metras of Charlton, Nancy, wife of David Tothill of Barnstead, NH, Paula Metras of Sturbridge, and 7 granchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. He also leaves 2
Sister: s, Pauline Metras of Southbridge and Suzanne Metras of Centerville, VA. He was born in Southbridge, son of Louis R. and Lucy E. (Tremblay) Metras. He was a member of St. Mary's Church. Arthur graduated from Cole Trade H.S., and Worcester Jr. College, and Fitchburg State College where he obtained his teaching certificate. He retired after 22 yrs. from Worcester Industrial Technical Institute (WITI) where he taught drafting.
