The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. SOUTHBRIDGE - Victoria M. Theriault, 92, formerly of 107 Pine St., died yesterday in Providence House Nursing Home, 84 Chapin St., where she lived since August.
She leaves a sister, Lillie Karle of Englewood, Fla.; nephews and nieces. She was born in Southbridge, daughter of Joseph and Josephine (Trembley) Theriault, and lived here all her life.
She worked at the former Central Optical Co. many years ago.
Miss Theriault was a member of Notre Dame Church.
The funeral will be held tomorrow from F.A. Sansoucy & Son Funeral Home, 40 Marcy St., with a Mass at 9 a.m. in Notre Dame Church, 456 Main St. Burial will be in Old Notre Dame Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home are 8 to 9 a.m. tomorrow. The family requests that flowers be omitted. Memorial contributions may be made instead to the Renovation Fund of Notre Dame Church, 61 Marcy St., Southbridge, 01550.
