Invention The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. SOUTHBRIDGE - Philip A. Renaud, 88, of 415 Charlton St., a retired supervisor, and a longtime church and civic leader, died yesterday in The Medical Center of Central Massachusetts - Memorial, after an illness.

He leaves his wife of 64 years, Juliette M. (Guillet) Renaud; a daughter, Rachel T. Renaud; a
Brother: , Omer Renaud; and a
Sister: , Irene Gamache, all of Southbridge. He was born in Southbridge, son of Israel and M. Mederise (Leduc) Renaud. He graduated from Mary E. Wells High School in 1926, where he was president of his class, and attended Northeastern University in Boston.

Mr. Renaud was a supervisor in the planning and production control department of American Optical Co., where he worked for 48 years. He retired in 1971. Mr. Renaud was a Eucharistic minister of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, president of its Parish Council, and former president of its League of the Sacred Heart. He
