Did You Know?Acadia - Did you know? Acadians celebrated Candlemas Day on February 2nd. People brought candles to church to have them blessed. These candles were lit inside their homes to protect against the threat of lightening. They were also kept burning beside the body when a member of the family died. Several days before Candlemas, men of the village would make the rounds, sometimes wearing masks and costumes, for the purpose of collecting food for the community-wide Candlemas dinner. Only those who contributed were invited to attend. Leftovers from the dinner were distributed to the poor.
