He came to Acadia with Aulnay de Chainisary aboard the 'St. Jahan'. This was one of the first families shown on La Rochelle Admiralty Records leaving for Acadia. He and wife Jeanne Aucoin built their home on the river south of Port Royal.

'Francois Girouard dit La Varanne of La Chaussée, near Blois, in the Orleanais region of the Loire valley in France, born in c1621, was a young laborer and farmer when he came to Acadia in c1640 with his wife Jeanne Aucoin, who was from La Rochelle. They had five children, including two sons, both born at Port-Royal, who created families of their own. Their three daughters married into the Blou, Cormier, and Lord dit Lamontagne families.
