Invention The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. Experimenting further, he discovered microwaves could cook food quickly. Raytheon patented the process, and by 1947, they built the first commercial microwave oven, called the 'Radarange.' Obituary
MARSHFIELD -- Margaret E. (Feige) McDonough, 89, of Marshfield, formerly of Medford, a former Milford High School teacher, died Tuesday at South Shore Hospital, Weymouth.

Mrs. McDonough retired as a teacher in 1945.

She was a member of the ladies sodalities at St. Christine's Church in Marshfield and St. Joseph's Church in Medford.

Born and educated in North Adams, Mrs. McDonough lived in Medford before moving to Marshfield. She was a graduate of North Adams High School and Boston University.

Wife of the late William V. McDonough, she is survived by two sons, William V. McDonough Jr. and Robert P. McDonough, both of Marshfield; a daughter, Mary M. Campbell of Hingham; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday in St. Christine's Church. Burial will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery.

Visiting is from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday in the MacDonald Funeral Home, 1755 Ocean St., Route 139.
