Did You Know? Québec Généalogie - What is a 'dit/dite' name?  When the first settlers came to Québec from France it was a custom to add a 'dit' nickname to the surname. The English translation of 'dit' is 'said'. The Colonists of Nouvelle France added 'dit' names as distinguishers. A settler might have wanted to differentiate their family from their siblings by taking a 'dit' name that described the locale to which they had relocated. The acquiring of a 'dit' name might also be the result of a casual adoption, whereby the person wanted to honor the family who had raised them. Another reason was also to distinguish themselves by taking as a 'dit' name the town or village in France from which they originated. This custom ended around 1900 when people began using only one name, either the 'dit' nickname or their original surname.

"Jean-Charles Vacher, godson of Governor Rene Gultier de Varennes, was baptized at Trois-Rivieres on 12 March 1686, a little more than three months after the marriage of his parents. He had already settled in Yamchiche when, on 5 November 1709, he was married in Trois-Rivieres to Marie-Claire Bergeron, born in Sorel in 1686. They eventually had five sons and seven daughters. Following in his father's footsteps, Jean-Charles was more than a farmer. He too, practiced the trade of wood working. On 5 February 1759, he bequeathed his tools and workshop furniture to his son Charles. Jean-Charles and Marie-Clarie Bergeron were both buried at Yamahiche, he on 11 September 1761, she on 19 March 1767."
