"Joesph, godson of Paul de Chomedey and of Jeanne Mance, was made a child of God and of the Church on 25 November 1654, the day of his birth, by the Jesuit missionary Claude Pijart. On 9 December 1681, this first Loisel son became the owner of 60 square arpents of land on the Saint-Jean Coast. On 7 April 1682, Joseph was married at Pointe-aux-Trembles de Montreal to Jeanne Langlois, daughter of Honore and of Marie Pontonnier. Through his 13 children, Joseph was the only one to pass on the name of Loisel. He died at Pointe-aux-Trembles on 9 June 1724."

What is a "dit/dite" Name?

When the first settlers came to Québec from France, it was a custom to add a "dit" nickname to the surname. The English translation of "dit" is "said." Colonists of Nouvelle France used dit names as distinguishers. A settler might use one to differentiate a branch of the family from siblings, sometimes choosing a name connected with the place to which the family had relocated.

A dit name could also result from a casual adoption or from honoring the family that had raised someone. In other cases it identified the town or village in France from which the person originated. The custom ended around 1900, when people increasingly used only one name, either the dit nickname or the original surname.
