Howard Phillips Lovecraft, commonly known as H.P. Lovecraft, was an American writer born on August 20, 1890, in Providence, Rhode Island. He is best known for his contributions to the horror genre, particularly cosmic horror. Lovecraft's life was fascinating, marked by a unique blend of literary creativity, personal struggles, and a lasting impact on the world of speculative fiction.

Lovecraft's early life wasn't all sunshine and rainbows. His father, Winfield Scott Lovecraft, suffered a nervous breakdown when Howard was only three years old and died in a mental institution five years later. This left Lovecraft's mother, Sarah Susan Phillips Lovecraft, to raise him. Lovecraft was a precocious child, reading and writing at an early age.
