Biography
Louis Armstrong, often referred to as 'Satchmo' or 'Pops,' was a legendary figure in the world of jazz and one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century. Born on August 4, 1901, in New Orleans, Louisiana, Armstrong grew up in a poverty-stricken neighborhood known as 'The Battlefield.'
Louis' early life was far from easy. His father abandoned the family when he was an infant, and his mother, Mary Albert Armstrong, was a domestic worker struggling to make ends meet. Louis, in his youth, took odd jobs like delivering coal and working for a Jewish family called the Karnofskys, who treated him with kindness and even lent him money to buy his first cornet.
It was during these formative years that Armstrong discovered his passion for music. He started playing the cornet in various local bands and honed his skills by listening to older musicians and learning from their experiences. He found solace in music, and his talent began to shine through.
