Thelma Ritter was a remarkable American actress, known for her distinctive characters and performances, particularly in the 1950s and 1960s. Born on February 14, 1902, in Brooklyn, New York, she was the daughter of a city employee and grew up in a working-class environment. Thelma's journey into the world of acting was not a typical one, as she started her career relatively late compared to many Hollywood stars.

Before venturing into acting, Ritter worked various jobs, including stenographer and fashion consultant. Her innate talent for humor and a no-nonsense attitude eventually led her to a career on the stage. Thelma made her Broadway debut in 1946 in the play 'When We Are Married,' and her performance caught the attention of Hollywood.
