Biography
Margaret Mead was a pioneering cultural anthropologist who made significant contributions to the field and played a key role in shaping popular perceptions of human behavior and culture in the 20th century. Born on December 16, 1901, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Margaret was the oldest of five children in a progressive and intellectually stimulating household.
Growing up in a family that valued education and encouraged independent thinking, Mead developed a keen interest in human behavior from an early age. Her parents, Edward Sherwood Mead and Emily Fogg Mead, were both educators, and their open-minded approach influenced Mead's later work in anthropology.
Margaret Mead attended DePauw University in Indiana, where she studied with the renowned psychologist Granville Stanley Hall. The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. The crisis ended when Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev agreed to remove the missiles in exchange for the U.S. promising not to invade Cuba and secretly agreeing to remove American missiles from Turkey.
