Biography
Emily Dickinson, often hailed as one of the most significant American poets, led a life shrouded in mystery and marked by her unique perspective on poetry and existence. Born on December 10, 1830, in Amherst, Massachusetts, Emily Elizabeth Dickinson was the second child of Edward Dickinson and Emily Norcross Dickinson. She grew up in a prominent, prosperous family, her father serving as a lawyer and a treasurer of Amherst College.

Emily's childhood was characterized by a close relationship with her brother Austin and sister Lavinia. Despite her family's social standing, Emily's education was unconventional. She attended Amherst Academy for a brief period, but her voracious appetite for learning led her to read extensively on her own. She immersed herself in literature, exploring the works of Shakespeare, the Brontë sisters, and the Bible, among others.

U.S. President1881 - July 2 - James A. Garfield was shot at the Baltimore and Potomac Railroad Station in Washington, D.C., at 9:30 am on Saturday, July 2, 1881. He died in Elberon, New Jersey, two months later on September 19, 1881. The shooting occurred less than four months into his term as president. Charles J. Guiteau was convicted of Garfield's murder and executed by hanging one year after the shooting. Chester Arthur becomes President of the United States.
