Québec Généalogie - What is a 'dit/dite' name? When the first settlers came to Québec from France it was a custom to add a 'dit' nickname to the surname. The English translation of 'dit' is 'said'. The Colonists of Nouvelle France added 'dit' names as distinguishers. A settler might have wanted to differentiate their family from their siblings by taking a 'dit' name that described the locale to which they had relocated. The acquiring of a 'dit' name might also be the result of a casual adoption, whereby the person wanted to honor the family who had raised them. Another reason was also to distinguish themselves by taking as a 'dit' name the town or village in France from which they originated. This custom ended around 1900 when people began using only one name, either the 'dit' nickname or their original surname.

Biography
François BRUNET — (ca 1644 - 1702)

François Brunet dit Bourbonnais passed away on June 23rd, 1702, at Lachine, Québec. He and wife Barbe Beauvais had 12 children, including a pair of twins, Marie-Anne and Catherine. François and Barbe's firstborn, Jean, married Elisabeth Deshayes in the Louisiana territory and raised a family in Kaskaskia, Illinois. (Gérard Lebel in Nos Ancêtres reports that Elisabeth was an 'Indian woman', but this is most likely untrue.) François and Barbe have a great number of notable descendants including actors Jim Carrey and Ryan Gosling.

There are complex connections between the families of François Brunet, Barbe Beauvais, and the merchant/ fur-trader Alexandre Turpin, including a scandalous liaison. Barbe had in-laws among the Turpin family. Her eldest brother Raphaël married Alexandre's daughter Elisabeth Turpin in 1683.
