I remember meeting my great-grandfather when I was 3 or 4 years old. He would give us white and pink peppermints. I remember him being called “Sammy”, and now I know that was his first name. Of course at the time I had no idea who he was, or his significance.
There is a photo of a stone marker which looks oddly out of place, as it is white and the lettering is filled with black. It appears to have been hand carved with stone tools, and reads “Sam Plourde”
“Ni 1880”
Had he carved his own marker? Clearly, many French-Canadian farmers and lumberjacks were illiterate, and that may be why the French word for Born, (Né), is spelled incorrectly. But why is his birthdate year 1880 and not 1883, as the obituary states?
