Biography
Alexander Twilight was born free in 1795. He was the son of Ichabod Twilight and Mary Twilight. His father, Ichabod Twilight, was a Revolutionary War veteran who had earned his freedom. His parents were the first Black people to arrive in the city of Corinth, Vermont.

He married Mercy Ladd Merrill, April 20, 1826.

Called successively to pastor congregations in Vergennes and Brownington, Vermont, Twilight also became the headmaster of the Orleans County Grammar School.

Elected to the Vermont General Assembly in 1836, Twilight became the first African American to serve in a state legislature in the United States.
