Orleans county. Willoughby river, a branch of Barton river, furnishes this town with a good mill stream. It lies 45 miles N.N.E. from Montpelier, and 57 N.E. from Burlington. Chartered 1790. Population, 1830, 412. It is divided from Irasburgh, on the W., by Barton river. In this town are about 1,500 sheep.

Orleans Co. This town is watered by Willoughby River. The soil in many parts of the town is good, but is generally better for grazing than tillage. Brownington was formerly the shire town of the county.

It is a place of some business, and has a neat -village. The settlement of the township was commenced about the year 1800.

Boundaries. North-easterly by Salem and Charleston, south-easterly by Westmore, south-westerly by Barton, and west by north by Orleans and a small part of Irasburgh.

Productions of the Soil. Wheat, 1,549 bushels ; Indian corn, 426 bushels : potatoes, 22,600 bushels ; hay, 1,391 tons ; maple sugar, 18,395 pounds : wool, 4,711 pounds.

Distances. Six miles east from Irasburgh, and forty-eight north-east from Montpelier.
