WORK & OCCUPATION

Occupation

Recorded occupation: Soldat du regiment de Carignan

The soldat, or soldier, is the first military rank in the army, at the first level of military hierarchy.

Some of the first soldiers to set foot on Canadian soil were French or English men, hired by companies engaged in exploration or the fur trade. These companies were responsible for all costs associated with the soldiers: recruitment, overseas travel, equipment, maintenance and salary. The soldiers were responsible for protecting the expeditions and their interests.

What is a "dit/dite" Name?

When the first settlers came to Québec from France, it was a custom to add a "dit" nickname to the surname. The English translation of "dit" is "said." Colonists of Nouvelle France used dit names as distinguishers. A settler might use one to differentiate a branch of the family from siblings, sometimes choosing a name connected with the place to which the family had relocated.

A dit name could also result from a casual adoption or from honoring the family that had raised someone. In other cases it identified the town or village in France from which the person originated. The custom ended around 1900, when people increasingly used only one name, either the dit nickname or the original surname.

MARTEL - from Old French 'martle' which means hammer. Nickname given to a blacksmith or stone breaker. The name of Martel formerly designated a mace, a shock weapon with a head furnished with spikes, hence the nickname of Charles Martel, who fought the Saracens, at Poitiers in 732; the name hammer was then given to a forge tool. The name of Martel evokes, at the same time, the brave knights and the modest craftsmen. Honoré Martel-Lamontagne was born circa 1632 in Paris, Île-de-France, France. Son of Jean Martel and Marie Duchesne, he married Marguerite Mirault, daughter of François and Jeanne Closse-Claus, on November 26, 1668 in Quebec. From this union were born 14 children. Widowed in September 1706, he married Marie Marchand, widow of Joseph Massé, on November 3, 1707 in Quebec. This union remains without posterity. Arrived in the country on June 30, 1665 with the Sieur de Tracy, this soldier of the Allier regiment settled in Quebec, then Neuville. The date of his death, which
