Biography
LACHANCE - nickname of someone lucky, or ironic nickname of the eternal loser. Antoine Pépin dit Lachance was born on April 10, 1636 in Le Havre, Normandy (France). He is the eldest son of André Pepin and Jeanne Chevalier, married on July 12, 1635. In the spring of 1652, Antoine was recruited by a merchant from Rouen and he signed a contract by which he obliged himself to come to New France, as an employee. This contract obliged him to stay in New France for three years in return for transportation costs, maintenance and the payment of certain wages. On his arrival, he is taken in charge by the Community of Inhabitants who had hired him at his own expense. He was the hired man (as a servant) of Louis d'Ailleboust de Coulonge, former general of the fleet and ex-governor general of New France, whose property was located one league from the city of Quebec. on Cap-des-Diamants, an area of 50 arpents.
