About Isle-aux-Grues
The parish of Saint-Antoine-de-l'Isle-aux-Grues is made up of the islands of the Isle-aux-Grues archipelago, sometimes called the Montmagny archipelago and populated by around 160 Gruoises and Gruois. It was incorporated in 1860 on an archipelago of islands, located in the center of the St. Lawrence east of Quebec City, between Île d'Orléans and Île-aux-Coudres, with a total area of almost 27 kilometers.
The Isle-aux-Grues archipelago is made up of the following islands:
Ile-aux-Oies
Grosse Ile
Sainte-Marguerite Island
Ile-au-Canot
A number of small uninhabited islands and islets: Île-à-Deux-Têtes, Rochers-Rouges, Île-aux-Oignons, Île-au-Héron, Île-aux-Corneilles.
The name of Île-aux-Grues comes from this wandering bird sung by Horace, the crane: gruem advenam. Returning from Florida during the great fall and spring migrations, the birds have found this island a meeting place for resting, feasting and incubation.

The colonization of Isle-aux-Grues began in 1679, but in 1683, the year of the constitution of the parish, the island was home to only three families, in all, there were fifteen people.
Mr. Pierre de Bcart, Sieur de Grandville, acquired it in 1678. He sold it to Mr. Louis Liénard Villemmonde de Beaujeu. The island has changed owners many times.
1831 - Parish of St. Antoine de I'll Aux Grues is established
1832 - Isle au Grues
The parish of St. Ignace comprehends the fief of that name with Goos and Crane Islands (Ilse aux Oies and aux Grues), which are the property of Mr. McPherson and contain several settlements, which with the salt marshes are very valuable; the proprietor has an extensive farming establishment and rears a large stock of cattle: the excellent butter which he sends to the Quebec market in considerable quantities is sold for 1d. or 2d. per lb. higher than any other.

1836 - Vente des âmes (Sale of Souls)
Another amazing tradition is called the Sale of Souls. It is a festivity that consists of selling objects at auction for the benefit of the island's factory. The auction began in 1836 with the sale of wheat and meat donated by parishioners. The first auction brought in the sum of 3 pounds 17 shillings. In the following years, eel, salt cod, corn, wool, sheep, tow, etc. were offered. The warden in charge made his rounds in the early days of the year for the quest for the Child Jesus. The parishioners then gave him effects instead of money. Today, the money from the collection of the Child Jesus is paid into the account of the factory and the effects collected and sold at auction are used to pay for services for the souls in purgatory.
