Invention The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. Experimenting further, he discovered microwaves could cook food quickly. Raytheon patented the process, and by 1947, they built the first commercial microwave oven, called the 'Radarange.' Initially used in commercial settings, microwaves becomes affordable for home use by the 1960s and 1970s, revolutionizing cooking.

'Monday evening at 7:00 PM, my father Robert Irvin Fox passed away at the age of 83 in the presence of his wife Carolyn, my two older brothers and myself and our wives. Dad was born in Franklin, Massachusetts in 1924. Mom has a bracelet that he gave her when they were 3. He served in WW II in the Marines, and took advantage of the G.I. Bill to earn a B.S. in Business at Northeastern University in Boston. He worked as a salesman for a number of years, in the meantime volunteering for 3 years as Cubmaster of Pack 29 and 4 years as Scoutmaster of Troop 33 of Franklin, Mass (Old Colony Council, Walpole, Mass). Dad then made a career change at about age 40 and worked for the Boy Scouts of America for the next 22 years. He was a DE in Old Colony Council, Field Director of Chicago Area Council, Scout Executive of Union Council (NY State) and ended his professional career as Assistant Scout Executive, Camping for National Capital Area Council.
