The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. Marabelle 'Merry' D. Blessing passed away peacefully at her home on November 18, 2018 . She was 90 years old.
Merry was born on January 11, 1928 in Crosby, MN to Rev. James E. Dowler and Bernice (Chaffee). She grew up in Northern Minnesota, graduating from Memorial High School in Ely, MN in 1946. She received her BA in Sociology from the University of Minnesota in Duluth in 1951.
Merry served in the United States Navy for five years before being honorably discharged as a Lieutenant. On June 21, 1957 she married Donald A. Blessing. After several moves over many years, their family eventually settled in Longmont, CO in 1978.
Merry was a vocational counselor in California before starting her family. Once her children were grown, she resumed a career with Boulder County in the Private Industry Partnership Workforce; she retired in 1988.
She was a member at the First United Methodist Church. Merry enjoyed spending time with her family, reading and doing crossword puzzles. In
