The operation aimed to liberate Western Europe from Nazi German control. The landings marked the beginning of the end for Nazi Germany, leading to the eventual Allied victory in Europe.

1945 - The atomic bomb is invented (J. Robert Oppenheimer, et al., United States)

The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. He was born in Greene on June 24, 1926, son of the late William and Laura English. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Ann Drachler English; his son, Peter and Julie English of Stowe, OH; his daughters, Susan Kaarlsen, San Antonio, TX, and Martha and Joe Pyles of Greene. Also surviving are grandchildren, Karen and Dino Cinelli, Shawn and Laura Kaarlsen, all of San Antonio, Kevin Kaarlsen, Chester, NY, Elizabeth and Jay Takacs, Suffern, NY, Cynthia and Jared Gorman, McDonough, NY, Kate and Sean Maloney, Seattle, WA, Jonathan English, Seoul, Korea, and Ketha and Daniel Earp, Corpus Christi, TX; as well as great-grandchildren, Jessica, Kevin Jr., Mollie, Mallorie, Gehryt, Noah, Aidan, Madison, Genevieve, Elijah and Gabriel.
