Ralph Walter Cook, Jr.

Ralph was born at his grandmother's house in North Attleboro on March 12, 1921. His father was in college at the time. He was the oldest son of Ralph Sr. and Hazel (Washburn). He had one brother, Ronald Cameron, and a sister, Carolyn (Cook) Fox. He was raised on the farm at 664 East Central St., Franklin, MA. His grandparents Walter and Caroline lived upstairs. He was baptized a Congregational, however, his mother was Baptist. The farm house had a telephone, electricity, and running water. But there still was no indoor toilet till he was about 15. The house was heated wood, and his mother cooked with wood for several years. As a young boy the farm took a lot of his time and his grandfather's, because his father had a lot of health problems due to WWI. He was hospitalized several times. Because of Ralph Jr.'s interest in framing, and the time taken up by the farm, he attended the Norfolk Agricultural High School in Walpole, MA.

Known as Operation Overlord, it involved over 156,000 troops from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and other Allied nations. The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. Experimenting further, he discovered microwaves could cook food quickly. Raytheon patented the process, and by 1947, they built the first commercial microwave oven, called the 'Radarange.' Initially used in commercial settings, microwaves becomes affordable for home use by the 1960s and 1970s, revolutionizing cooking.

1953 - On July 27, 1953, the Korean War ended with the signing of an armistice agreement at Panmunjom. This ceasefire halted the conflict between North Korea, supported by China and the Soviet Union, and South Korea, backed by United Nations forces primarily from the United States. The agreement established the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) near the 38th parallel, effectively maintaining the pre-war boundary and creating a buffer zone between the two Koreas.

1962 - The Cuban Missile Crisis was a tense 13-day standoff in October 1962 between the United States and the Soviet Union over the installation of Soviet nuclear missiles in Cuba, just 90 miles from the U.S. coast. The crisis is considered the closest the Cold War came to escalating into a full-scale nuclear war. It began when American spy planes discovered the missiles, leading to a U.S. naval blockade of Cuba and intense negotiations. Obituary
Ralph W. Cook, Jr. age 92 died peacefully with his family around him in the Maples Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Wrentham on Tuesday May 21. He was the husband of Mary W. (Lawrence) Cook for over 71 years. They were inseparable working side by side for all these years.
Born in North Attleboro, March 12, 1921, the son of the late Ralph W. and Hazel M. (Washburn) Cook, Mr. Cook was a lifelong Franklin resident.

He was a graduate of the Norfolk County Agricultural High School in 1939.

Ralph and his late brother Ronald 'Jake' owned and operated one of the oldest family farms in Franklin. The farm was started by their Great-Grandfather Samuel Cook in the early 1800’s. A farm stand was started by their grandfather, Walter in 1896 and they sold fruits and vegetables until the stand closed in 1996.

The farm consisted of over 40 acres of vegetables and 15+ acres of orchard. They raised chickens, turkeys, and other farm animals in earlier years.
