Invention The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. WEST SPRINGFIELD - Ralph S. Thompson, Jr., 90, passed away on November 9, 2015. Born in Springfield, MA on December 12, 1924 to the late Ralph and Lillian (Sheaffer) Thompson, he was a lifelong resident.

Ralph served his country in the United States Army Air Force during WWII. During his service, he piloted a P40 as a sub chaser. He owned Ralph Thompson’s Auto Repair in West Springfield. He was a longtime member of the Pioneer Valley Sportsman’s Club, American Legion Post 207, and VFW, all of West Springfield.

Predeceased by his wife Adele (Dudzik) Thompson and brother Harry Thompson, he leaves his brother Donald Thompson of FL and close friend Charlotte Stadnicki and her family as well as Eleanor Del Bueno and Joseph 'Skip' Demerski, all of West Springfield, MA.

Funeral services will be held on November 23, 2015 at 8:45 AM at New England Funeral & Cremation Center, LLC 25 Mill Street, Springfield, MA. Burial with military honors will follow in the Massachusetts Veterans’...Read MORE...
