History of the Town of Townshend

'Deacon Barnard SALISBURY was born in Dummerston, Vt., March 30, 1786, and married Arathusa DUNCAN, of that town, August 3, 1806. About 1807, they came to Townshend and located on road 39, on what is called West Hill. He cleared .130 acres. He was left an orphan at the age of three years, and was brought up by a Mr. HADLEY. He received a common school education and fitted himself for the duties of a teacher, which he performed in several schools prior to his marriage. After his-settlement in Townshend he was honored with many public trusts. He was a magistrate for about twenty-five years, and a deacon of the Congregational church for an equal period, serving on the committee to whom was entrusted the erection of the parsonage, &c. He died in 1854. He was twice married. His youngest child, Henry SALISBURY, the present postmaster and clerk of Townshend, was born in this town July...Read full story
