Experimenting further, he discovered microwaves could cook food quickly. Raytheon patented the process, and by 1947, they built the first commercial microwave oven, called the 'Radarange.' Initially used in commercial settings, microwaves becomes affordable for home use by the 1960s and 1970s, revolutionizing cooking.

Germaine D. (Fournier) Lippe, 93

SOUTHBRIDGE— Germaine D. (Fournier) Lippe, 93, of 395 High St., died Thursday, May 29th, in her home, after an illness.

Her husband, Lionel L. Lippe, died in 1995. She leaves two sons, Donald R. Lippe of Bonita Springs, FL and Dennis P. Lippe of Southbridge; two daughters, Doris J. Cournoyer of Turners Falls and Paulette T. Theodoss of Southbridge; 11 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by 5 brothers and 3 sisters. She was born in No. Grosvenordale, CT, the daughter of Joseph C. and Marie (Gendreau) Fournier.

Germaine worked at the American Optical Co. in Southbridge for many years. She enjoyed gardening and crocheting. She loved music, baking and cooking. Most of all she had a great love for her family.

Her funeral Mass will be held on Monday, June 2nd, at 10:00am in Notre Dame Church, 446 Main St.,
