1944 - D-Day, which occurred on June 6, 1944, was a pivotal World War II operation where Allied forces launched a massive invasion on the beaches of Normandy, France. Known as Operation Overlord, it involved over 156,000 troops from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and other Allied nations. The operation aimed to liberate Western Europe from Nazi German control. The landings marked the beginning of the end for Nazi Germany, leading to the eventual Allied victory in Europe.

1945 - The atomic bomb is invented (J. Robert Oppenheimer, et al., United States)

The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. Experimenting further, he discovered microwaves could cook food quickly. Raytheon patented the process, and by 1947, they built the first commercial microwave oven, called the 'Radarange.' " MILLBURY -- Ronald E.N. Korch, 76, of 2 Railroad Ave., a World War II veteran and a former traffic manager, died Monday, Oct. 15, in UMass Memorial Medical Center -- University Campus, Worcester, after an illness.

He leaves his wife of 54 years, Norma V.D. (Smith) Korch three daughters, Karen R. Schudy of Branson, Mo., Marilyn P. Bowser of Charlton and Lauren N. Boffoli of Worcester a brother, Kenneth Korch of Webster two sisters, Bertha Wentworth of Webster and Lillian Sweeney of State College, Pa. six grandchildren nine great- grandchildren nephews and nieces. He was born and raised in Webster, son of Andrew and Panna (Rozgonyi) Korch, and lived in Webster before moving to Millbury in 1963. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in Asia, the Pacific, Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and the Philippine Liberation.
