1881 - July 2 - James A. Garfield was shot at the Baltimore and Potomac Railroad Station in Washington, D.C., at 9:30 am on Saturday, July 2, 1881. He died in Elberon, New Jersey, two months later on September 19, 1881. The shooting occurred less than four months into his term as president. Charles J. Guiteau was convicted of Garfield's murder and executed by hanging one year after the shooting. Chester Arthur becomes President of the United States.

Died; Friday, August 3, 1883, at his residence in Maple Valley Township, Benjamin Severson, in the 57th year of his age.

He was born in Schohar(i)e county, New York. About the year 1860, he moved to Wisconsin and during the late unpleasantness enlisted in the Second Wisconsin Cavalry where he served four years with honor to himself and company. (country?) During that time he contracted the fever (malaria) and ague from which he suffered ever after. He was married March 16, 1866, and leaves a wife and six children to mourn their loss.
