Did You Know? Québec Généalogie - What is a 'dit/dite' name?  When the first settlers came to Québec from France it was a custom to add a 'dit' nickname to the surname. The English translation of 'dit' is 'said'. The Colonists of Nouvelle France added 'dit' names as distinguishers. A settler might have wanted to differentiate their family from their siblings by taking a 'dit' name that described the locale to which they had relocated. The acquiring of a 'dit' name might also be the result of a casual adoption, whereby the person wanted to honor the family who had raised them. Another reason was also to distinguish themselves by taking as a 'dit' name the town or village in France from which they originated. This custom ended around 1900 when people began using only one name, either the 'dit' nickname or their original surname.

"Pierre dit Le Jeune and des Loups-Marins was born in 1658 and died at Port-Royal about 1740. He married about 1689 to Jeanne Bourgeois, daughter of Jacques and of Jeanne Trahan. They had five sons and four daughters. Jacques Bourgeois was a Lieutenant at Port-Royal and the first surgeon in Acadia. Jeanne died at Port-Royal on 9 June 1716."

'Pierre le jeune dit Des Loups-Marins, born in c1658, married Jeanne, daughter of Jacques Bourgeois, at Port-Royal in c1689. They had 10 children, half of them sons, but only Francois, a middle-son, married, into the Lord and Pitre dit Marc families. Three of their daughters married into the Martin dit Barnabé and Brun families. '

1695 - Oath of Allegiance to King William III
In August 1695, English authorities imposed on the Acadian inhabitants at Port-Royal an oath of allegiance to King William III. Many family heads signed or made their marks on the document that attested to their having taken the oath.
