1944 - D-Day, which occurred on June 6, 1944, was a pivotal World War II operation where Allied forces launched a massive invasion on the beaches of Normandy, France. Known as Operation Overlord, it involved over 156,000 troops from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and other Allied nations. The operation aimed to liberate Western Europe from Nazi German control. The landings marked the beginning of the end for Nazi Germany, leading to the eventual Allied victory in Europe.

1945 - The atomic bomb is invented (J. Robert Oppenheimer, et al., United States)

The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. Experimenting further, he discovered microwaves could cook food quickly. Raytheon patented the process, and by 1947, they built the first commercial microwave oven, called the 'Radarange.' Initially used in commercial settings, microwaves becomes affordable for home use by the 1960s and 1970s, revolutionizing cooking.

In 1963, on November 22, President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas, while riding in a motorcade through Dealey Plaza. Johnson was sworn in as the 36th President of the United States shortly after Kennedy's death. The assassination sparked numerous conspiracy theories and investigations, with the Warren Commission ultimately concluding that Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone in the assassination. Earl Schenck SCHENCK, EARL F., age 86, died Saturday, August 4, 2012 at RI Hospital surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of the late Eileen M. (Martin) Schenck. Born in Smithfield, RI he was the son of the late Adolph E. and Lillian M. (Plante) Schenck. He was a 1943 graduate of LaSalle Academy, a 1949 graduate of Bryant College, and a resident of Cranston for the last 52 years. Earl was a salesman with the American Automobile Association (AAA) for 20 years, retiring in 1994. He was a WWII Army veteran, and also served as a Eucharistic Minister, Lector and Cantor at St. Matthew's Church. He was the devoted father of Karen M. Harris of Cos Cob, CT, Colleen A. Schenck of Worcester, MA, Joanne E. Schenck of Cranston and Carolyn M. and her husband John Higgins of Cranston; and loving grandfather to David J. and his wife Kelly Harris, Christopher J. Harris, Lauren K. and Allison J. Higgins. He was the brother of the late Donald E. Schenck. His funeral will be held on
