While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. Experimenting further, he discovered microwaves could cook food quickly. Raytheon patented the process, and by 1947, they built the first commercial microwave oven, called the 'Radarange.' Initially used in commercial settings, microwaves becomes affordable for home use by the 1960s and 1970s, revolutionizing cooking.1962 - The Cuban Missile Crisis was a tense 13-day standoff in October 1962 between the United States and the Soviet Union over the installation of Soviet nuclear missiles in Cuba, just 90 miles from the U.S. coast. The crisis is considered the closest the Cold War came to escalating into a full-scale nuclear war. It began when American spy planes discovered the missiles, leading to a U.S. naval blockade of Cuba and intense negotiations. Mrs. HERBERT L. DANIELS
Mrs. Eva E. Daniels, 60, wife of Herbert L. Daniels of Shaftsbury, died Monday night at Putnam Memorial Hospital after a long illness.
Born in Shaftsbury Dec 25, 1910, she was the daughter of George and Edith (Frisbie) Galusha. Her education had been received in the local schools and she and Mr. Daniels were married in May 1933 in North Bennington by the late Msgr. Thomas J. Burke. They had always resided in Shaftsbury, and while her health permitted she was greatly interested in Morgan horses. She was formerly employed at Union Carbide in Bennington.
Survivors besides her husband are two sons, George 'Sam' Daniels of Shaftsbury and Ronald Daniels of Arlington; three daughters, Mrs. John (Beverly) Dell'Arma of Shaftsbury, Mrs. Edward (Lucille) Knight of Sandgate and Mrs. John (Sandra) Hamilton of Shaftsbury; two sisters, Mrs. Jeanette Russell of Waterbury, Vt., and Mrs. Luella McLean of Bennington; 10...Read MORE...
