His father, Pierre Robinau, secretary in the king’s privy chamber, provincial receiver in the generality of Paris, then receiver general of finances at Tours, paymaster of the light cavalry of France, member of the Cent-Associés, was presented to the king as a candidate for the post of governor of New France, with Guillaume Guillemot and Jean de Lauson (the elder). It was the latter who was chosen, in 1651.
René Robinau, after serving in two campaigns as an ensign in Turenne’s regiment, arrived at Quebec in 1645. He was in Governor Huault de Montmagny’s employ when, in January 1646, he took part with Nicolas Marsolet in the rebellion of the “petty habitans”
