BERTRAND – Comes from the Germanic name Berhthramn, of which the term “berht” means brilliant, or illustrious, and the term “hramn” means raven.
Jean Bertrand was born around 1653 in Matha, Saintes en Saintonge, France. Son of Jean and Renée Boucherot, he married Marguerite Tessier, daughter of Marc and Jacqueline Ledoux, in 1685 in Charlesbourg. From this union were born 2 children. After the death of his wife, he married a second time with Jeanne Lavallée, daughter of Jean and Marguerite Dusson, in Charlesbourg in 1696. From their union was born 1 child. Arrived in the country in 1683 as a ploughman, he settled in Charlesbourg. In 1687, he undertook to go to war in place of Étienne Bédard and returned safe and sound. He died in March 1709 at the Hôtel-Dieu de Québec.
