Michel DEMURIES dit HAZEUR GAMELIN was born abt. 1697 in Québec Province, Canada. Michel DEMURIES dit HAZEUR GAMELIN was the child of ?   and   ?

Marriage(s) and Child(ren):

He married  Marie-Madeleine BIBEAU 30 April 1731 in Saint-François-du-Lac, Canada, New France .  The couple had (at least) 8 children. Marie-Madeleine BIBEAU  was born 26 May 1711 in Saint-François-du-Lac, Québec, Canada.  She died 30 September 1771 in Sorel, Québec, Canada (Saint-Pierre).  She was the daughter of Pierre BIBEAU and Marie-Renee PARENTEAU.

Michel DEMURIES dit HAZEUR GAMELIN died 30 December 1788 in Sorel, Province of Québec, Canada .

PARENTS ARE NOT PROVEN. THEY ARE NOT NAMED IN THE MARRIAGE RECORD.

FROM HTTP:/ / NEWSFEED.ROOTSWEB.COM/ TH/ READ/ GEN-FR/ 1998-11/ 0911192673:

"1. ACTUAL MARRIAGE RECORD ONLY IDENTIFIES HIM AS "MICHEL". ALTHOUGH, THE RECORDS OF HIS CHILDRENS' BAPTISMS IDENTIFY HIM AS "MICHEL HAZEUR".

2. IN NOTARIAL ACT (LAFOSSE) DATED 27 JUN 1735, THERE IS A DONATION OF LAND FROM PIERRE BIBEAU AND MARIE-RENEE PARENTEAU TO A MICHEL DEMURIES DIT HAZEUR AND MARIE-MADELEINE BIBEAU, HIS WIFE, THEIR DAUGHTER.

3. IN MARRIAGE CONTRACT, LAFOSSE, DATED 29 APR 1731, BETWEEN MICHEL "GAMELIN", SON OF GAMELIN (NO FIRST NAME PROVIDED), MARCHAND OFFICIER DE ST FRANCOIS DU LAC AND MARIE-MADELEINE BIBEAU, DAUGHTER OF PIERRE BIBEAU AND MARE-RENEE PARENTEAU OF ST- FRANCOIS.

INTERESTINGLY ENOUGH, IN THE MARRIAGE RECORD, JOSEPH GAMELIN, MARCHAND
OFFICIER, IS PRESENT.

I AM NOT SURE HOW TO SORT THIS OUT, BUT IT IS NOT CLEAR WHO MICHEL HAZEUR'S PARENTS ARE. THERE ARE SEVERAL POSSIBILITIES. JOSEPH GAMELIN COULD BE HIS NATURAL OR "ADOPTED" FATHER, OR SOMEONE WITH THE SURNAME DEMURIES DIT HAZEUR (I HAVE NEVER BEEN ABLE TO FIND ANYONE WITH THIS NAME). IF ANYONE CAN ADD ANYTHING TO THIS, OR SOLVE THIS MYSTERY, I FOR ONE WOULD BE VERY GREATFUL.

>FURTHER TO MY MESSAGE ABOUT MICHEL HAZEUR, I JUST TOOK A LOOK AT MY DATABASE AND FOUND THAT I HAD THE RECORD OF HIS BURIAL FROM THE SAINT-PIERRE-DE-SOREL CHURCH RECORDS. HE DIED 30/ 12/ 1788 AT THE AGE OF 91 (THE AGE NOT A VERY RELIABLE PIECE OF INFORMATION--IN MY EXPERIENCE, THIS COULD BE OUT BY AS MUCH AS 20 YEARS). HOWEVER, HIS DYING IN 1788 DEFINITELY MEANS THAT IT IS HIGHLY UNLIKELY THAT HE WAS THE SON OF LEONARD HAZEUR, WHO DIED 25/ 10/ 1687. THE QUESTION REMAINS... WHO WAS HE?

HOPE THIS HELPS,

HI PAT, THANK YOU FOR SHOWING INTEREST IN THIS MYSTERY. IT CONTINUES TO PUZZLE ME. FIRST, CAN YOU CHECK THAT DEATH DATE AGAIN ON MICHEL HAZEUR? TANGUAY SHOWS 30 SEP 1771, SOREL. I HAVE NO OTHER SOURCE.

I HAVE SOME ADDITIONAL IMPRESSIONS I'D LIKE TO SHARE:

FIRST, I PRESUME THAT MICHEL HAZEUR MUST BE ILLIGITIMATE, BECAUSE IN HIS MARRIAGE RECORD, HE IS ONLY IDENTIFIED AS 'MICHEL', AND IN MANY OF THE BAPTISMAL RECORDS OF HIS CHILDREN, HE IS ALSO ONLY IDENTIFIED AS 'MICHEL', ALTHOUGH THE BAPTIZED ARE LISTED WITH THE SURNAME 'HAZEUR'. ALL OF THIS FROM PRDH RECORDS. TANGUAY, IN VOL 4, PAGE 475, LISTS HIS MARRIAGE AND NAMES HIM AS MICHEL HAZEUR (NO PARENTS IDENTIFIED). I PRESUME TANGUAY DERIVED HIS LAST NAME FROM BAPTISM RECORDS OF HIS CHILDREN AS I MENTION ABOVE.

SECOND, IN THE FOLLOWING MARRIAGE CONTRACT:

29 AVRIL 1731 (MTL)
PUYPIROUX DE LAFOSSE, A. (1717-1744)
OBSERVATION: LA DATE DU DIPTT N'EST PAS INDIQUI. ACTE SANS INTITULI.
DIPTT D'UNE CONVENTION DE MARIAGE ENTRE MICHEL GAMELIN, FILS DE GAMELIN, MARCHAND OFFICIER, DE ST FRANCOIS ET MARIE-MADELEINE BIBEAU, FILLE DE PIERRE BIBEAU, HABITANT ET DE MARIE-RENIE PARENTEAU, DE ST FRANGOIS.

I PRESUME THAT MICHEL GAMELIN IS INDEED MICHEL HAZEUR HAS HE IS LATER
IDENTIFIED IN THE BAPTISMS OF HIS CHILDREN. I FIRST THOUGHT THAT THIS COULD BE MICHEL GAMELIN DIT GAUCHER, WHICH JETTE IDENTIFIES ON PAGE 461 AS A SON OF PIERRE GAMELIN. BUT, THIS MICHEL GAMELIN MARRIES SOMEONE ELSE IN 1735. AND, NOTE THAT THE CONTRACT IS 29 APR 1731, THE DAY BEFORE THE ACTUAL MARRIAGE OF MICHEL HAZEUR AND MARIE-MADELEINE BIBEAU.

SINCE THE MARRIAGE CONTRACT DOES NOT STATE THE FIRST NAME OF HIS FATHER 'GAMELIN', WE ARE LEFT TO GUESS WHICH GAMELIN WE ARE TALKING ABOUT. I HAVE TWO CANDIDATES. FIRST, IT COULD BE PIERRE GAMELIN MARRIED TO MARIE-JEANNE MAUGRAS. SECOND IS IT COULD BE JACQUES-JOSEPH GAMELIN WHO MARRIES JEANNE-ANGELIQUE CHIASSON IN 1720. JACQUES-JOSEPH WAS BORN IN 1691 AND MAY HAVE FATHERED MICHEL PRIOR TO HIS MARRIAGE IN 1720. BOTH ARE LIKELY CANDIDATES, BECAUSE WE KNOW THAT BOTH WERE "MARCHAND, OFFICIER" IN THEIR OCCUPATION (I LEARNED THIS FROM VARIOUS RECORDS IN PRDH).

WHO ARE THE CANDIDATES FOR MOTHER? FROM THE FOLLOWING NOTARIAL RECORD:

27 JUIN 1735 (MTL)
PUYPIROUX DE LAFOSSE, A. (1717-1744)
DONATION D'UNE TERRE SITUIE EN LA CENSIVE ET SEIGNEURIE DE SOREL PAR PIERRE BIBEAUT, HABITANT ET MARIE-RENIE PARANTAU, SON IPOUSE, DE ST FRANCOIS, `
MICHEL DUMURIES DIT HAZEUR ET MARIE-MADELEINE BIBEAUT, SON IPOUSE, LEUR FILLE.
DOC #: 17350627PA016219

WE SEE THAT MICHEL IS GIVEN A FARM BY HIS IN-LAWS. THIS MAKES SENSE BECAUSE RIGHT AROUND THIS TIME HE MOVES FROM ST-MICHEL D'YAMASKA TO SOREL SUPPORTED BY BAPTISMAL RECORDS IN PRDH. ALSO, HE IS IDENTIFIED AS 'MICHEL DUMURIES DIT HAZEUR'. 'DUMURIES' IS PROBABLY A TRANSFORMATION OF DU MARAIS OR DESMARETS (SEE JETTE, PAGE 561) THIS WOULD IMPLY THAT MICHEL HAZEUR IS DESCENDED FROM JEAN-FRANCOIS HAZEUR, SIEUR DU PETIT MARAIS (SEE JETTE, PAGE 561). IF WE LOOK
AT ALL THE POSSIBLE FEMALE DESCENDANTS IDENTIFIED BY JETTE, THERE IS ONLY ONE POSSIBLE CANDIDATE TO BE THE MOTHER OF MICHEL HAZEUR (ALL OF THIS BASED ON MICHEL BEING BORN AROUND 1711, FROM TANGUAY): JEANNE-LOUISE HAZEUR, DAUGHTER OF JEAN-FRANCOIS HAZEUR, SIEUR DU PETIT MARAIS. I DO NOT CONSIDER THIS LIKELY BECAUSE JEANNE-LOUISE BECOMES A NUN IN 1691 AND DIES IN 1706.

THIRD, NOTE THAT IN MICHEL HAZEUR'S MARRIAGE RECORD (PRDH), 30 APR 1731, JACQUES-JOSEPH GAMELIN, MARCHAND/ OFFICIER IS PRESENT. THIS RE-ENFORCES MY VIEW THAT THERE IS SOME RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE GAMELINS AND MICHEL HAZEUR.

THERE IS ANOTHER POSSIBILITY THAT THE MOTHER IS FROM THE GAMELIN LINE AND THE FATHER IS FROM THE HAZEUR LINE. TO ME, THIS MAKES MORE SENSE, BECAUSE I HAVE SEEN MORE OFTEN THAN NOT THAT THE MOTHER RAISES AN ILLIGITIMATE CHILD, NOT THE FATHER. BUT, HIS WOULD CONTRADICT THE RECORD OF THE MARRIAGE CONTRACT WHERE MICHEL HAZEUR IS IDENTFIED AS 'FILS DE GAMELIN, MARCHAND, OFFICIER'. BUT, IF WE PURSUE THIS, THERE ARE MORE LIKELY CANDIDATES. ONE STRONG AND LIKELY CANDIDATE IS MARIE-JEANNE GAMELIN, DAUGHTER OF PIERRE GAMELIN AND MARIE-JEANNE MAUGRAS, B. 19 DEC 1692. MARIE-JEANNE NEVER MARRIES AND DIES 17 APR 1731, ST
FRANCOIS DU LAC. IT IS POSSIBLE THAT IF MICHEL IS THE ILLIGITIMATE SON OF MARIE-JEANNE, HER FATHER 'ADOPTS' HIM AS HIS SON. IN THAT CASE, THE ONLY THREE VIABLE CANDIDATE FOR FATHER TO CONSIDER ON THE HAZEUR SIDE:

1. JEAN-FRANCOIS HAZEUR WHO MARRIES CATHERINE MARTIN IN 1708 IN QUEBEC. (JETTE PAGE 561)

2. THIERRY HAZEUR, SON OF FRANCOIS HAZEUR AND ANNE SOUMANDE, WHO BECOMES A PRIEST IN 1706.

3. PIERRE, ALSO SON OF FRANCOIS HAZEUR AND ANNE SOUMANDE, WHO ALSO BECOMES A PRIEST IN 1706.

LASTLY, I MUST NOTE THAT THE HAZEUR'S ARE IN QUEBEC CITY PROPER, AND I HAVE NO INDICATION THAT THEY EVER WERE IN THE YAMASKA AREA, AND VICA VERSA FOR THE GAMELINS, ALTHOUGH SEVERAL OF THE HAZEUR'S APPEAR TO BE WELL-TRAVELLED.

AS YOU CAN SEE, I AM REALLY INTERESTED IN SOLVING THIS ONE. IF ANYONE CAN BE OF ASSISTANCE, I WOULD SINCERELY APPRECIATE IT.

French-Canadian Culture (www.buzzle.com /articles /french-canadiane-culture.html)
Did You Know? Québec Généalogie - What is a 'dit/dite' name?  When the first settlers came to Québec from France it was a custom to add a 'dit' nickname to the surname. The English translation of 'dit' is 'said'. The Colonists of Nouvelle France added 'dit' names as distinguishers. A settler might have wanted to differentiate their family from their siblings by taking a 'dit' name that described the locale to which they had relocated. The acquiring of a 'dit' name might also be the result of a casual adoption, whereby the person wanted to honor the family who had raised them. Another reason was also to distinguish themselves by taking as a 'dit' name the town or village in France from which they originated. This custom ended around 1900 when people began using only one name, either the 'dit' nickname or their original surname.
