Biography
Lewis Carroll, whose real name was Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, led a fascinating and multifaceted life as an English writer, mathematician, logician, and photographer. He was born on January 27, 1832, in Daresbury, Cheshire, England. The third of eleven children, Dodgson showed an early aptitude for mathematics and demonstrated a vivid imagination.
Dodgson's father, a clergyman, encouraged his intellectual pursuits. Young Dodgson attended Rugby School and later went on to study at Christ Church, Oxford, where he would spend the majority of his adult life. Despite suffering from a stutter, Dodgson was known for his brilliance in mathematics and earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1854.
During his time at Oxford, Dodgson became close friends with the dean's family, the Liddells. It was during a boating trip on the River Thames in July 1862 that he began to tell the story that would eventually become his most famous work, 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.'
