Marie was indomitable and prevailed despite multiple devastating tragedies. In this historical time period, 1600-1679, in France, women were expected to be married by age 13. Marie did not marry until she was twenty one years old. Obviously she didn’t care what society thought, flaunted convention, and had a life before she married. When she did marry on June 4, 1621 in Courgeon, Mortagne, Perche, France, it was to my ninth great grandfather, Jean Giroux. Who was a Weaver by trade. One year and a half after their marriage, both of Marie’s parents are listed as deceased on the exact same date, January 21, 1623. (It is a mystery I will try to solve). Marie was pregnant at this time with her first child. Two months later, on March 25, 1623, she gave birth to her first child, a son, named Etienne. They would go on to have seven children together. Two infants did not live for even a day. One son only lived to age ten. After her seventh, and last child was born on March 6, 1640, her husband Jean, died on January 10, 1641. She was left to raise four children on her own at age 41. Then Etienne, her first born child died on October 4, 1641, age 18 barely nine months after her husband. Three children outlived her. She lived a very long life of 79 years for the historical period from 1600-1679 in France. This is my ninth great-grandmother.
