Guy Thomas CARSWELL died 11 October 1966 in Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, USA.





He entered the University of North Carolina just prior to WWI, but when the U.S. became involved, he joined the Navy and became a Sergeant in the Medical Corps. After the war, he married a school teacher Clara Horn, who also grew up on a farm. Together, they resumed Guy's education, this time at Wake Forest University. She taught music and helped with the "Pressing Club" that Guy ran. After receiving his B.A. and L.L.B. from Wake Forest, they moved to Charlotte in 1921.

Guy's success as a trial lawyer was almost immediate. He simply "had a way with juries" as a fellow lawyer put it. Clients in civil and criminal cases flocked to his office on the first floor of the Law Building. He had 2 law partners. First, was Joe Ervin, brother of Senator Sam Ervin. The second was James F Justice.

As Guy's professional success produced financial rewards, he was increasingly generous. He was a founder of Myers Park Baptist Church and creator of the Carswell Foundation which gave college educations to many deserving young people. He endowed the Carswell Scholars Program at Wake Forest . The Administration Building at the wake Forest Law School bears his name, a gift from his widow. His alma mater honored him with a Doctor of Humane Letters Degree.

He taught the Men's Bible Class at the First Baptist Church on N. Tryon St. and later at the new Myers Park Baptist Church on Queens Rd. for so long, no one living can furnish the exact dates!

He was a founding director of Home Finance Company, which later merged with Auto Finance Company to become American Credit Corporation, now BarclaysAmerican.

At the time of his death,in an automobile accident, he was a member of the board of directors of First Union NAtional Bank, American Credit Corporation, the Charlotte Young Men's Christian Association and was a fellow in the American College of Trail Lawyers
