Exploring the Ancestry of Noel LANGLOIS: Events, Pictures, and Documents

LANGLOIS, NOËL, pilot of the St. Lawrence River, early settler on the seigneury of Beauport; b. c. 1603 at Saint-Léonard in Normandy, son of Guillaume Langlois and Jeanne Millet; d. 15 July 1684.

Following the relinquishment of New France by the British in 1632, Robert Giffard, the seigneur of Beauport, persuaded Langlois to become a settler in the new land. It is probable that Abraham Martin dit L’Écossais, the king’s pilot at Quebec, and possibly related to him by marriage, greatly influenced his decision. Langlois and his future wife, Françoise Grenier (Garnier), left France with Giffard’s prospective settlers in the spring of 1634 and arrived at Quebec on 24 June. Following his marriage at Quebec in July, Langlois settled at Beauport. Three years later he received from Giffard a grant of land in perpetuity. LANGLOIS - agglutination from Old French 'l'Anglois' which means 'the Englishman', the nickname of an individual originating from England. 1) Nöel Langlois was born around 1605 in St-Léonard-des-Parcs, in Normandy (Orne). Son of Guillaume and Jeanne Millet, he married Françoise Grenier on July 25, 1634 in Quebec. From their union were born 10 children. Widowed, he married in second marriage, Marie Crevet, widow of Robert Caron, on July 27, 1666 in Château-Richer. They have no children. He was in Beauport in 1634. In 1667, he owned 60 acres of land in value. In 1681, he owned 4 rifles, 1 pistol, 1 horse, 17 cattle, and 30 acres of cultivated land. He died in Beauport on July 14, 1684. When he died, he was said to be the oldest inhabitant of the country.

'On June 29, 1637, after honouring their agreement, Robert Giffard, conceded to Francoise and Noel, 300 arpents of land in Beauport, just west of the Montmorency Falls, where Noel was also employed as a carpenter, engaged in farming and the lumber business, and still acted as navigator when the need arose. They would have ten children.'
