1944 - D-Day, which occurred on June 6, 1944, was a pivotal World War II operation where Allied forces launched a massive invasion on the beaches of Normandy, France. The operation aimed to liberate Western Europe from Nazi German control. The landings marked the beginning of the end for Nazi Germany, leading to the eventual Allied victory in Europe.

1945 - The atomic bomb is invented (J. Robert Oppenheimer, et al., United States)

The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. Experimenting further, he discovered microwaves could cook food quickly. Raytheon patented the process, and by 1947, they built the first commercial microwave oven, called the 'Radarange.' 1953 - On July 27, 1953, the Korean War ended with the signing of an armistice agreement at Panmunjom. Dana Winslow Thomas, age 89, of Alton, passed away December 30, 2017 at Wolfeboro Bay Center, surrounded by his loving family.

Born September 13, 1928 in Newton, Massachusetts, son of Harold William Thomas and Marion (Bean) Thomas, he resided in Belmont, Massachusetts, a graduate of Belmont, MA High School, and also resided in Newton, MA. He resided in Alton since 1962. Dana grew up coming to Lake Winnipesaukee, having summered here since the 1930s. He was a builder of wooden runabout boats, racing on the Big Lake in younger years.

A United States Army Veteran, he served during the Korean war.

Dana was a retired automotive technician, he had worked at McGreevy’s and Cantin’s in Laconia and at Banks in Concord.

Survived by his wife of 60 years Nancy (Stewart) Thomas and their 5 children: Elaine Thomas of Farmington, Joanne Thomas of Laconia, Brad Thomas of Westbrook, ME, Annette Thomas of San Diego, CA, and Mark Thomas of Alton. He is also survived by...Read MORE...
