They usually obtained furs by trading with First Nations peoples, rather than hunting themselves. Most coureurs de bois traded illegally, without a license from the Quebec government.

Marie-Madeleine PINEL was the child of Gilles PINEL and Anne LEODET (LEDET)
"Francois Vandal fell in love with Marie-Madeleine Pinel, daughter of Gilles and of Anne Ledet, third child of a family of nine. She was born about 1662, probably at Sillery. Her grandfather Nicolas Pinel, a Normand, died of gunshot wounds in September 1655, after ten years of living in Acadia and New France. The father of the bride had been baptized at La Rochelle on 28 February 1635."
"The missionary Germain Morin joined Francois and Marie-Madeleine in bonds of matrimony at Neuville, on Tuesday, 19 March 1680, the feast day of Saint Joseph. Two particular witnesses left their names associated with Vandal history: Nicolas Sylvestre dit Champagne, and Jean Prou, husband of Catherine Pinel."

'At the end of the year 1697, Francois Vandal, his head still full of dreams for the future, received the call from the Master of Life. The Lord had set a new place at His table in order to welcome His friend. Francois was but 46 years old as per the registry of Neuville. He was buried on 6 December in the presence of his father-in-law Gilles Pinel, his brother-in-law Guillaume Pinel, and his friend Nicolas Sevestre.'
