1944 - D-Day, which occurred on June 6, 1944, was a pivotal World War II operation where Allied forces launched a massive invasion on the beaches of Normandy, France. Known as Operation Overlord, it involved over 156,000 troops from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and other Allied nations. The operation aimed to liberate Western Europe from Nazi German control. The landings marked the beginning of the end for Nazi Germany, leading to the eventual Allied victory in Europe.

1945 - The atomic bomb is invented (J. Robert Oppenheimer, et al., United States)

The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. Experimenting further, he discovered microwaves could cook food quickly. Raytheon patented the process, and by 1947, they built the first commercial microwave oven, called the 'Radarange.' South Sioux City - Emma J. Treadway, 76, of South Sioux city died Wednesday, Dec. 8, 1993, at a Sioux City hospital after a brief illness.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Becker - Hunt Funeral Home in South Sioux City with the Reb. Owen Lester officiating. Burial will be in the Omaha Valley Cemetery, rural Homer, Neb. Visitation will be noon to 9 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at the funeral home.

Mrs. Treadway was born Dec. 19, 1916 in Homer, the daughter of George and Emma (Harris) Trickey. She married Hubert H. Treadway Sept. 8, 1934, in South Sioux City. He died in march 1977 in Los Angeles,. She had lived in California from 1960 to 1980, when she returned to South Sioux City.

Survivors include four sons, Hubert M. of South Sioux City, Benny G. of Ames, Iowa, Eddie of Sioux City, and Earl of Jackson, Neb.; two daughters, Delores Beckenbach of Long Beach, Calif., and Leona Marshall of...Read MORE...
